ABOUT

I am Kathleen – Kat to my long-time friends, coworkers, and family. I’m an Arizona native and married to Alex, my partner in crime and creativity…or maybe just creativity.  We have 2 dogs  who keep us on our toes, and a desert tortoise that has been with me for 35 years. By day I work in the legal field to keep the bills paid.  Outside of work, I create – painting, drawing, collages, photography and writing. Outside of artistic pursuits, and in no particular order, I enjoy music, road trips, off-road exploring, Netflix/Hulu binges, hanging out with friends & family, entertaining the dogs, and a good cup of coffee.

Captain Fudge and me, 1989

My interest in art began at the age of 3, when I decided my room needed a mural to liven it up. Crayon was my medium of choice.  It took only minutes for my crudely scrawled masterpiece to come to life and hours for my mother to remove it.  Along with art, I also had great interest in horses. During my grade school years, I showcased my love of both by filling the margins of my assignments and tests with horse-related doodles.  To calm my equine obsession and itchy drawing hand, my parents sent me to riding lessons. For several years I rode a big paint horse named Captain Fudge. Riding was my biggest highlight during my childhood and teen years.  Like all good things, it came to an end when it was time to head off to college.  I still think of him often, and still miss riding.  Perhaps someday, if the stars align in my favor, I will have horses in my life again. If not meant to be, I will, however, always have art.

I majored graphic design and got my feet wet with legal studies. Ultimately, I decided that artistic ventures were best suited for my own personal enrichment rather than as an occupation. However, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a handful of freelance design projects several years ago. These include: magazine ads, website & logo design, package design, publication layouts, and miscellaneous commissioned projects.

pfertz – simplicity, aquarium magazine ad

From 2006 to 2013, Alex and I owned and operated PFERTZ Aquarium Products, for which I created the package design, website, and advertising media. Alex developed the formulas and manufactured the products; additionally, he handled marketing and customer support. In 2013, after some life-changing events, we made the decision to sell our business to gain back free time to devote to our respective creative ventures and relieve ourselves of the demands that come with owning/running a business.

In October 2017, I launched DEEMINZ, a web comic that revolves around a trio of mischievous spirits that have infiltrated our world.  They spend their time in our dimension gracing us with their presence by living, working, and playing among us or shape-shifting to blend in with the environment to observe us, plot their next move, or simply be flies on the wall.

Life is still busy as ever, but on OUR terms!
