Weekly 5: May 17th 2025

Weekly 5 is a round-up the past week’s creative news, discoveries, and happenings in my world!

Best thing that happened in my world this week:

Nearly three years ago, I wrote about Unfinished Business.  I had mentioned a folder where I consolidated a volume of notes, scraps of imagery and sketches. Over time I’ve been chipping away at transfering notes while squeezing in time for art and life in general.  In the meantime, it had also become a place to stash important paperwork. Earlier this week I had a chunk of downtime in the afternoon, and I went through the folder to remove all paperwork that was not related to creative ventures. I scanned necessary items to save in the digital archive.  The best part of this mundane task was ridding my studio – and our home – of several pounds of material taking up space!

This Fall, 600+ Objects Spanning Wes Anderson’s Career Will Go on View at the Design Museum

From COLASSAL

Including more than 600 objects, most of which will go on display in Britain for the first time, the exhibition will showcase iconic set pieces, preparatory notes, puppets, and models from numerous films. Just a few highlights include a miniature motorcycle that belonged to Mr. Fox in the titular The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), Sam Shakuski’s Scout kit from Moonrise Kingdom (2012), and Anderson’s personal notebooks from The Royal Tenenbaums (2001).

Artist discovery:  Sarah Watts

I’m an illustrator, art educator and surface designer for Ruby Star Society. I have worked with over 35 companies ranging from the fashion to the literary to the stationery and gift industries with brands like Target, American Greetings, and Houghton Mifflin. I specialize in teaching Photoshop, surface design, and drawing techniques and I’m so incredibly proud to say that hundreds of students have learned how to live more creatively through my courses like From Paint to Pattern or through my membership: Sketchbook Squad. Working in both illustration and fabric design have each taught me a LOT about taking analog art into a digital world and I’m so excited to pass on that knowledge to you!

a study in nonverbal communication & an unexpected friendship

A bearded man wearing a wide-brimmed hat was working around the adjacent house. After we traded the universal sign of acknowledgement (eye contact + a short nod), I felt less awkward about standing there drawing his property. I see you, stranger…Satisfied with the sketch, I packed up to continue on. But before I left, decided to show the man what I had been doing in his front yard. I waved to get his attention and presented my sketchbook. Once he understood what I was showing him, he became quite animated and gave me another universal sign: the thumbs-up.
