I’m not anti-social, but it I feel ideas form more fully when I’m by myself and able to have quiet focus on creative work. Alone-time allows me to brainstorm about art – whether for painting of digital art. Ironically, ideas that excite me the most pop up only when I’m somewhere/someplace I can’t possibly stop to bring them to fruition. It might be while dining with friends, sitting in a traffic jam, or in the middle of an intense project at the office. The best I can do in those moments is to make a quick note on a Post-It or in my phone’s Notes app until I am able to revisit the ideas later.
Aside from artistic ventures, alone time can also be used to create new routines; take breaks from social media or other digital distractions; mediate; take a short solo trip to get out of the house; or use the time to create a small space at home dedicated only to creating.
Taking advantage of, or dedicating time to periods of solitude helps develop a sense of sanctuary and peace, not only at home, but also in one’s mind. Having a designated safe space is important for our well-being, and offers a reminder to take advantage of alone time.
