Fun with foam and cardboard

I had the day off and spent much of the long weekend updating the DEEMINZ website. When I needed breaks from my chair, I tackled a few small chores and made some art.

I experimented with two large foam pieces and a small piece of cardboard from recently-purchased electronics packaging. I already had smaller pieces of cardboard, foam and other materials, but these two are the largest I have on hand.

After applying a thin layer of black paint to my gel plate, I used the foam to lift the paint and create texture, then used the cardboard edges to draw a grid. Once the black layer dried, I added color, then allowed more time for the paint to dry before pulling. The first result turned out okay, subsequent prints, not so much.

I think part of the issue is my 8×10 gel plate is old. I have a new one waiting to be opened, so I’ll be trying this experiment again. On the upside, these sheets can be saved for later to use in collages and other mixed media projects.
